Full disclosure – when I talk about success, I am also talking about confidence and happiness. To me those three words are pretty much interchangeable.
So, with this in mind, let’s talk about one of the most important factors in designing a successful/confident/happy life: determination.
A friend of mine believes that if you accomplish a goal through determination, that is being being successful. As an entrepreneur I am learning that determination is one of the most important keys to success. It is what keeps me going, even with the challenges of WordPress and Google Analytics. It is what keeps me going when it would be easy to just give up.
It’s All Worth It
Determination is remembering that it is all worth it. Whether we are enterpreneurs or job seekers or just living life, we need to remember that it is all worth it. Whenever we ask ourselves that nagging question – why am I doing this? Should I just give up? Should I stop looking for a job? Should I resign myself to an unfulfilled life? Should I close the business and find “a real job?”
Just when you are on the brink of giving up, somehow you remember why you wanted to reach this goal in the first place. Like every entrepreneur, I can sometimes feel defeated and struggle with that very same question – why am I doing this?
As a youth coach, I know I am doing this because I want to make the world a better place. That’s not the sales and marketing response that some people want to hear. But it is MY response. It is my authentic reason.
I coach and am building Puddle Jump Coaching because I want to change the world – one person and one family at a time.
Imagine a family where a young adult and her parents are able to talk about the future in a constructive and respectful way. Where a young person feels listened to and valued, and the parents have an appreciation of their child’s determination to start his own life.
A family where the parents are not frustrated by their child’s lack of direction or focus, and the child looks to the future feeling confident, not confused or terrified.
That is why I do what I do, and why I must continue to build, develop and grow my Puddle Jumping community. That’s why I need to stay determined.
Being determined means buckling down and focusing on what you want. If you want anything in your life, you need to be determined to get it. Just look at the great teachers, musicians, politicans, business people, artists, poets, writers and social activitists; the one thing they all have in common is a determination to reach their goals.
Being determined means digging deep inside you; deeper than you ever thought possible. It means focusing on what you want, instead of what you don’t want. It means going so far outside of your comfort zone that you can’t even it see it in the rear view mirror.
Determination means getting up and trying again, and finding a new way if your first way doesn’t work.
I believe that determination ultimately leads to success. It may not get you there directly or quickly, but it is is an essential key in creating a successful life – both professionally and personally.
